5 Reasons to Seal Stone Tile

Stone sealing is an application of surface treatment to products that are constructed of natural tone. It is done to retard staining and corrosion. Here we have discussed about the reasons of stone sealing.

  • Staining may occur if the natural stone is left unsealed. It is the most common kind of damage. It is the result of any form of liquid or oils penetrating deep into the capillary channels. The penetration causes deposition of materials deep within, which in fact becomes impossible to remove without damaging the stone.

  • Salt attacks can take place when salts that are dissolved in water are carried into stone. The most popular effects are spalling and efflorescence. Salts, which expand in capillary gaps cause surface spalling. For instance, different calcium and magnesium salts in sea water considerably expand on drying by taking on the water of crystallization. But even sodium chloride that doesn’t include water of crystallization may make use of substantial expansive forces when its crystals grow.

  • Stones like marble, limestone and travertine binds the resistant grains in the sandstone reacting with acidic solution when on contact or on acid forming gases like nitrogen or oxides of sulfur. Acid actually erodes the natural stone leaving deadly marks on the polished surfaces. Over time, it will cause deep pitting, completely obliterating the forms of memorials, statues and other kinds of sculptures. Even acids that are used for household purposes like vinegar, cola, lemon juice, milk or wine have the capacity of damaging vulnerable kinds of stones.

  • Picture framing takes place when grout or water moves into edges of stone for creating an unsightly darkening affect. This kind of damage is basically irreversible.

  • Freeze-thaw may even take place if the stone is left unsealed. Spalling actually results when the water freezes in surface pores. Frost weathering is the general term that’s used. Basically water expands after freezing and that causes the natural stones to crumble, spall or crack through.
